If you have a young child in school, you’re probably worried about the time between when they get out of school and when you get off work. Those two times don’t line up in most cases. If they don’t have an older sibling to watch over them until you get home, your options are limited. You could hire a nanny or even ask a neighbor to keep an eye on them, but both of those require finding a person that you truly trust.
Another option is to enroll your child in an after-school program. These programs are often run by the school or another educational institution and offer a myriad of benefits to your child’s emotional and academic well-being.
Academic Support
Has your child ever come home with a homework assignment that made absolutely no sense to you? It’s more common among parents than you might think. After-school programs are often run by educators or others in the school system who know what your child is learning and how to help them. When they notice your child struggling with their homework, they have the time and knowledge to help your child master their classes.
Make Learning More Fun
School teachers do their best to make learning fun in the classroom, but that’s not always possible. With so many students and so little time to plan lessons, teachers can’t pour as much time into creating unique learning experiences as they would like.
That’s not a problem in an after-school program. There are often fewer students and more time for the educators to learn how your child learns best. They can craft extended lessons specifically to cement what your child is learning in the classroom, and even cover topics that aren’t covered in the classroom.
Explore Topics Outside of the Classroom
Public schools have a strict curriculum that is set by the state, and it doesn’t leave much room for deviation from the norm. But children are naturally curious, and those curiosities aren’t limited to what the state curriculum is. Most after-school programs give children the space to find their own passions and learn what they want to in a controlled environment with people there to guide them.
Provide a Safe Space
The most common time for children to get into trouble is after school before their parents get off work. For some children, that period of unsupervised time might provide a chance for them to prove their independence and responsibility, but others may not be ready for that. If they aren’t, after-school programs are a perfect place for them to stay safe and out of trouble.
Improve Social Skills
The only way for your child to grow their social skills is to be around other children their age. After-school programs tend to have a mix of peers your child sees during the school day and peers from other schools in the area. This lets them meet new people from a variety of different backgrounds in a safe space (and maybe grow their social circle a bit).
