Safer Sex Week on the Commons, Fun Ways to Promote Safe Sex


Students were invited to join the Peer Health Educators in celebrating Safer Sex Week, an event that ran Feb. 13 through 17. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Peer Health Educators tabled in the Campus Center Monday through Wednesday, discussing issues of consent, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), and birth control, offering candy and condom demonstrations.

Safer Sex Week also featured an event titled “Safer Sex on the Commons,” held in the Daugherty-Palmer Commons (DPC) on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. Representatives from Feminists United for Sexual Equality (F.U.S.E) joined the Peer Health Educators in providing informational booths and games that centered around healthy sexual habits.

The event was organized by Wellness Advocate Meghan Root, and focused on promoting sexual responsibility on campus.

“We had a table on consent and a table where students could practice putting condoms on models,” Root said. “There was also a vaginal model where you could practice putting on a female condom, and learn about the difference between typical use and appropriate use. Telling students not to have sex or how to have sex doesn’t typically work, but I think it’s more important to help them make more informed choices.”

The pamphlets on display included information on contraceptive options, drug and alcohol effects on sexual functioning, abstinence options, birth rate statistics, and information on HIV/AIDS. While some students sifted through the pamphlet table, others participated in the three rounds of the “Sex Games.”

Round one included three games that challenged student knowledge on safe sex. The first, titled Contraceptive Contemplation, involved students that were timed while attempting to match the types of contraception to their correct percent of effectiveness until they got them all correct.

STI Matching was also a popular attraction in which students used “STI dolls” with names of different STI’s and matched them to their correct symptoms and treatment. This game was also timed until all of the answers were correct. Students also played Genitalia Terms, in which they attempted to label the cardboard genitalia depicted with medical terminology.

Senior Johanna Galat felt the event was a success. “It was very informative,” she said. “I tabled for F.U.S.E. and we had people draw their own orgasm. It was really interesting to see; one person drew a graph.”

During an interlude, the acapella group Interchorus provided entertainment, singing a mash-up of “Lean On Me” and “Wonderwall.” TNA and SMC-Men also performed at the event. Also in the break between games, Peer Health Educators held several raffle drawings in which students won a variety of things including condoms, vibrators, lube, massage oils, and t-shirts.

Round two of the games featured a relay race with four heats in which each heat was made up of four players. Each person wore beer goggles that altered their vision and were spun in circles. After ten spins they ran to a table that included penis models and had to open a condom and place it on the model correctly. They then ran to another table where they were asked to put a condom on a banana without using their hands, and then proceed to the finish line. The four players with the fastest time moved on to the final round.

The final round decided who would be crowned the “SMCM Grand Supreme of Safer Sex” by playing a sex trivia round of twenty questions. Using buzzers, finalists had to answer questions about statistics, condom types, and misconceptions about pregnancy.

First-year Peer Health Educator Giselle Keating felt the event was informative and hoped students who attended got a lot out of it.

“I feel like it would have been a lot better if we had more people,” Keating said. “But I think the people who came really liked it.”
