Adler, Hovland, Williams Bring Global Climate Change Issues to Light

Greenhouse gases, CO2 emissions and global warming are common words in today’s vocabulary. On September 14 in Schaefer Hall, Dr. Charles Adler of the Physic Department, Dr. Bill Williams of the Biology Department and Dr. Al Hovland of the Chemistry Department gave a panel discussion on those very topics. The talk was split into three sections, with each professor having their own section concerning the energy crisis. The panel was concluded with questions from the audience.

Alezandra Russell Spreads Awareness About Boys In Thai Sex Industry

Thailand is labelled as the sex capital of the world. It is the place to go and get cheap sex. However, it’s not just girls that are targeted by the industry; boys are as well. That is why Alezandra Russell started Urban Light in Thailand two years ago to offer a support system to teenage boys who are forced into prostitution. She spoke on Septemeber 20 in Library 321 about her journey with these boys.

Rt 5 Construction in Works

After over 20 years of plans, deliberations and complications, construction on Route 5 has begun with the intention to make the highway safer, especially for pedestrians. The Capital Design Advisory Committee has three projects it is currently working on, with Route 5 being one of them. The committee hopes to bring better lighting, improved crosswalks and a way to make sure cars obey the posted speed limit.

Kripal Explores the Connection Between Religion, Myticism, Superhero Culture

On Monday, Sept. 26 author Jeff Kripal spoke about his book on the link between the mystic and the mutant to an almost full Auerbach Auditorium in St. Mary’s Hall. The lecture was provided by the Departments of English and Religious Studies.

Gender neutral housing on its way to St. Mary’s

For several years, the notion of gender neutral housing has been tossed around campus at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. However last spring former Student Government Association (SGA) president Marlena Weiss and the rest of the SGA passed a notion showing their unanimous support of this new housing, according to current SGA President Mark Snyder. Progress was being made to make this a reality until Weiss graduated last May.“[Weiss] and [Assistant Director of Residence Life] Kelly Smolinsky worked together on this for awhile,” Director of Residence Life and Associate Dean of Students Joanne Goldwater said. “But they didn’t progress as quickly as I thought it would.”
