Former SMCM Professor Norton Dodge Dies at Age 84

Artist Spotlight – Briana Manente

Senior Briana Manente began acting in middle school when she saw her older sister in a production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Since then, she’s acted in what she guesses is 25 or 30 productions and is currently performing the role of Lady Frederick in St. Mary’s production of another Shakespeare classic, As You Like It, her seventh show at St. Mary’s.

Women’s Soccer Off To Winning Season

Women’s soccer is off to a great season so far, with a 4-2 record. Last year, their record was 6-8-3, with a 5-2-1 record for conference games. Already, the girls and their coach, Brianne Weaver, ’00, are looking forward to a successful season. Weaver is currently “very pleased” with how the season is progressing. She said, “I think this is the strongest Seahawk team I’ve seen here,” including the years she played for the Seahawks.

Rt 5 Construction in Works

After over 20 years of plans, deliberations and complications, construction on Route 5 has begun with the intention to make the highway safer, especially for pedestrians. The Capital Design Advisory Committee has three projects it is currently working on, with Route 5 being one of them. The committee hopes to bring better lighting, improved crosswalks and a way to make sure cars obey the posted speed limit.

No “Love” for St. Mary’s

Loni Love has cancelled on us. Again. Last semester, Programs Board finally revealed that comic Loni Love would be gracing St. Mary’s with an act, but shortly thereafter, Love cancelled. She was rebooked to perform as part of Program Board’s Welcome Back Weekend, but on Saturday night, Director of Campus Programming and junior Francis Rodezno sent out an all-student email informing the campus that Love had cancelled her Sunday, Sept. 4 show.

News in Brief: The Pub Opens

Because of the success of the pilot program last spring semester, the Pub’s late night food option will officially open for business Thursday, September 1. Though only food will be served at its opening, the Pub will begin serving alcohol a week later on Thursday, September 8.
