Director of Public Safety Resigns

On Tuesday, April 12, Dean of Students Laura Bayless confirmed that former Director of Public Safety Christopher Santiago is no longer employed with St. Mary’s College. Santiago, who formerly served as the Assistant Director of Campus Safety for Keene State College in New Hampshire, began his work as Director of Public Safety on Sept. 7, 2010, making his tenure just over seven months long.

Embrace the Nest Mess

The weekend before Spring Break saw the first test of the new Nest policies. I am told only a handful of students went. In fact, The Point News sent a photographer to cover the event and he captured an empty upper deck – a far cry from the 400 people who crowded into Daugherty-Palmer Commons (DPC) at the last nest.

Alex Walls Selected as 2012-2013 Student Trustee

Alex Walls, Class of 2013, will be the 2012-2013 Student Trustee. Walls was selected Saturday, Feb. 25 out of four candidates including Griffin Canfield, Laura Rodriguez and Robert Rudd. Walls will serve as Student Trustee-in-training under next year’s Student Trustee, Maurielle Stewart.

Urgo Asks Governor for Additional Grant to Aid Affordability

President Joseph Urgo and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Molly Mahoney Matthews, are asking Governor O’Malley and the Maryland General Assembly for an additional $5 million a year to improve affordability and increase access to St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

George Waggoner, Director of Campus Technology Support Services, confirmed that on Feb. 15, St. Mary’s Technology Services and the University of Maryland Academic Telecommunications System (UMATS) successfully connected using a 100 MB/s internet line installed by Verizon two weeks ago. The connection fulfills services first requested one year ago.

After suspending all dance events funded by the Student Government Association (SGA) due to attendance at the Nest reaching unprecedented and dangerous levels, students and staff from Student and Activities and Programs Board settled on a Temporary Dance Party Policy introduced to the SGA on Feb. 22.

YouTube Applications Benefit Applicants, Keep College Creative

In the most recent issue of The Point News, Zach Eser wrote an opinion entitled “Video Applications on YouTube Only Benefit Internet ‘Trolls.’” Mr. Eser’s piece invoked some controversy over attacks on specific groups on campus. However, I want to instead address the value video applications add to the admissions process.

Verizon Fails to Increase Speed

Verizon, the Internet provider for St. Mary’s and the entire University of Maryland system, failed to double the speed of the college’s Internet despite hardware upgrades that could deliver Internet speeds nearly 20 times faster than current speeds.
