Students discuss online SGA Incident – Becky White Apologizes for “Impulsive Posts”

By

Dear St. Mary’s,

Recently there was an incidence of incivility on Tumblr and Facebook involving some SGA members, and I wanted to apologize for the part that I played. I am sorry. My original Tumblr posts were hateful and inappropriate, and I should never have written them.

I viewed Tumblr as somewhat of an online journal, forgetting that the Internet is a public domain and you really must be held accountable for everything you say. I can assure you, however, that what I wrote is not indicative of my actual views, but rather something I posted impulsively after hearing about some recently passed SGA legislation that upset me. I respect everyone in the current SGA administration and always have; that was simply a fleeting moment of anger. I understand how much power words hold, and the importance of remaining civil and classy at all times.

I promise that I will never again forget what it means to embody the St. Mary’s way, where we forge relationships based upon “mutual respect, honesty, integrity and trust.” As a public representative of St. Mary’s, I further understand that it is critical for me to personally uphold and champion this standard. I am deeply sorry that I have let you all down as a student leader, and I promise to serve you better next year.

Yours truly,

Becky White

SGA Vice President Elect

im really impressed at the courage it took on becky’s part to publicly own her mistakes and acknowledge fault, its important for us to move forward as a campus, but the only way that happens is if all parties involved follow the example ms. white has set.
